Quincy Jones always valued being a father and called it “one of the greatest blessings.” He loved that his kids could challenge him when needed. Here’s a look at his unique family and what they look like now.
Legendary music producer Quincy Jones recently passed away, leaving behind a legacy and seven children. The well-known songwriter had his children with five different women, each from different cultural backgrounds.
Quincy was incredibly proud of his family. He often talked about how talented each of his children was and how proud he was of them. Having been married three times and involved with women from various cultures, he addressed public opinions about this in an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
When Oprah mentioned that some people thought he only dated white women, Jones responded, “I have been with every kind of woman of every nationality,” explaining that he didn’t let race or location limit his relationships.
Quincy Jones believed that being in interracial relationships meant he was free from boundaries, a view he carried with pride throughout his life. Through these relationships, Quincy embraced fatherhood, raising six daughters and one son. In a Father’s Day post from June 2018, he reflected on the joy and responsibility of fatherhood.
He wrote, “Never underestimate your role in your kid’s lives…I learned that a bit later in my life, but I’m so glad I finally figured it out because being a father is hands down one of the greatest blessings!!”
Quincy also shared a lesson from his own father, who used to say, “Once a task has just begun, never leave it ’til it’s done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all.” This advice inspired Quincy to be dedicated to his work and his family.
Reflecting on his father’s strength in supporting their family during the Great Depression, Quincy appreciated looking back at old photos, which reminded him of his parent’s enduring love and dedication.
He urged other fathers to actively shape their relationships with their children, saying it’s never too late to start. Throughout his life, Quincy learned many lessons, but he always felt his family beside him.
His daughters, whom he loved deeply, always supported him, even holding him accountable when needed. Quincy remembered a family “intervention” and expressed gratitude, saying, “I’m so grateful for my daughters because they aren’t scared to stand up to their daddy. I am an imperfect human, and I’m not afraid to say it.”
The Chicago native acknowledged that his long life had led to misunderstandings and public controversies, but his daughters’ honest support helped him grow, even at 85.
Through all his success and struggles, the musician’s greatest strength and growth came from his family.
His eldest daughter, Jolie Jones, born on October 4, 1953, marked the start of his fatherhood journey. He had Jolie with his high school love, Jeri Caldwell, his first wife. Jolie, now a health advocate, has Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), which she describes as “debilitating.” This experience drives her to raise awareness, saying she feels “responsible to open up a dialog” on this issue.
Jolie, 69, emphasizes the importance of addressing health risks from wireless devices. She shares her love for family often, and in May 2024, she honored her mother with a heartfelt Mother’s Day Instagram post.
Quincy’s bond with each of his kids was strong. His second daughter, Rachel Jones, 59, was born on July 23, 1963, from a brief relationship with dancer Carol Reynolds. In July 2021, Quincy celebrated her birthday on Instagram, writing, “Happy Birthday to my sweet daughter Rachel <3!!! Thank U for your love & light." Rachel, a veterinarian, celebrated her own family on Mother’s Day 2022 with a post honoring her son and daughter. Another daughter, Martina Jones, was born on November 1, 1966, with Swedish model Ulla Andersson. When her parents separated, Martina moved to Sweden with her mother and followed her in modeling. She is now a photographer, sharing her work and travels on Instagram.
Quincy Jones III
Quincy’s only son, Quincy Jones III, born on December 23, 1968, followed in his father’s footsteps as a successful rapper and producer. He worked with major artists like Tupac and Ice Cube and scored films such as “Menace II Society.” His TV work earned him awards and an Emmy nomination. Quincy III, 55, is a loving father to his daughter, whom he calls his “Sweet Angel.”
Kidada Jones
From his marriage to Peggy Lipton, Quincy had two daughters, including Kidada Jones, 50, born on March 22, 1974. Growing up around celebrities, Kidada faced struggles due to her mixed heritage. After Peggy’s passing, Quincy described her as his “beloved” wife. Kidada and her sister Rashida honored their mother by encouraging donations to Seasons Hospice.
Rashida Jones
Quincy and Peggy’s youngest daughter, Rashida, was born on February 25, 1976. She became a successful actress, known for roles in “The Office” and “Parks and Recreation.” She also co-wrote and produced “Toy Story 4” and directed the Grammy-winning documentary “Quincy” about her father. Rashida, now 48, is also a mother, welcoming a son in September 2018.
Kenya Kinski-Jones
After Peggy, Quincy entered a relationship with German actress and model Nastassja Kinski. They had one child, Kenya Kinski-Jones, born on February 9, 1993. Kenya is a model and posted a touching tribute to her mother in April 2024, showing their close bond.
In March 2018, Quincy expressed pride for his daughters, calling them “brilliant, kind, creative, & perseverant.” He admired their resilience and extended praise to all women who shape culture.
Quincy passed away on November 3, 2024, at 91, peacefully at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family.
In a heartfelt statement, his family shared, “Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing. Although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life he lived and know there will never be another like him.”
Quincy Jones leaves behind a legacy that changed music and inspired generations. Though he is gone, his contributions will continue to resonate, reminding the world of his unmatched talent and vision.
